Crucial for Learning Discernment

Posted by: Michael Feather   in Teaching Discernment

I’m lazy by nature, so anything that is going to take some work is probably going to be put off until later. This often gets me into trouble, but being lazy does not work in my reading of Scripture.

I was reading in the Psalms late last night and was struck by one verse. Psalm 119:15 says, “I will meditate on your precepts
and fix my eyes on your ways.”

Meditation is one of those concepts we struggle with Read the rest of this entry »

Good Movie; Hard to Watch

Posted by: Michael Feather   in Reel Discernment

This describes so many movies that are out today, but the one I am thinking about is Gone Baby Gone. I went to see this today with my “movie buddy” and it was very well done. I liked the movie. The problem is in recommending it to anyone. Can you handle Read the rest of this entry »

How Nerds Vote

Posted by: Mike Robbins   in Discerning Truth

The following is a post written by Mike Robbins that will explain more fully his views on “electability.” Put your thinking caps on and let him know what you think.

There has been quite a discussion recently on the importance of electability. Read the rest of this entry »

The Kite Runner It Is

Posted by: Michael Feather   in Discerning Reader

Since I would like to get this book discussion going and not wait any longer, we are going to pick The Kite Runner as the first book. As Sarah had mentioned in her response to the first post, this book has been made into a movie and will be out fairly soon. If at all possible, I like to read the book before I see the movie, so I would like to get going on this.

Let me recommend the following as an initial structure. Read the rest of this entry »

The Power of a Pursuing Father

Posted by: Michael Feather   in Reel Discernment

As I already told you, we watched and discussed Blood Diamond last night in Rocky Mount. It was a wonderful time and I look forward to having more time there with the friends we have met.

Having said that, I wanted to share with you something that I did not include on the notes, but that took my breath away as I watched the movie yesterday. If you have not seen the movie and want to see it without any commentary, please go watch it and come back to read this.

The driving force behind the movie, the human reason I even care about the movie, is Solomon Vandy Read the rest of this entry »

Blood Diamond Notes

Posted by: Michael Feather   in Reel Discernment

Hello all,

I am posting here the notes form our most recent Reel Discernment on the movie Blood Diamond. We had a great discussion and the notes reflect some of what we talked about. I will have more thoughts on this movie in the future, but we will start with the notes.

Enjoy.

Support for Huckabee

In many of the blogs I read, there has been much discussion lately about Mike Huckabee. I found this one to be very interesting and wanted to point you to it.

Enjoy!

Who Believes in God Anymore?

Posted by: Mike Robbins   in Uncategorized

This week I’m going to take a look at a very subtle, but significant insinuation that has been noticeably present in this season of “Heroes”.

First, let’s look at what’s being presented:  Who do you see talking about God in a reverent, believing, or fearful manner?  Here’s a list: Monica (the teenage fast food worker in New Orleans), The Haitian (the Haitian), the Herrera’s (twins making their way to the States from, I believe, somewhere in South America), random nameless characters the twins have encountered south of Texas.
Who talks about God in a dismissive manner?  Dr. Mohinder Suresh (the world’s greatest geneticist and generally the smartest guy in the room).

Now, what’s their point?  They want to show that faith in God is a product of a less advanced cultural upbringing.  More educated minds better understand the world around them, so they don’t need to create spiritual mythologies.

It may seem as if I’m making a mountain of a molehill, but the subtlety is what makes these presentations so effective/dangerous.  If you pay attention, you’ll notice the overwhelming prevalence of this theme in most of what comes from Hollywood.  The world wants people to look at our faith as foolishness.  Someone told me there’d be days like this.
1 Corinthians 1: 18 – 25

Note:  “The Stand” is a great (long) movie to watch and think about how the world views this notion.

Electablility: Is it Important?

Posted by: Michael Feather   in Discerning Truth

There has been a good discussion about who we will vote for and Mike Robbins brought up “electablility” in relation to Mike Huckabee. Here is my question that I thought deserved its own post: Is electability important? In other words, should we be not voting for someone just because they will never get elected? If they are the best person for the job (in our opinion), shouldn’t we vote for them anyway? I really want to know your thoughts on this. I understand that our votes could be seen as “thrown away” if we do this, but are they really?

Now to separate this from Mike Huckabee, I think Mike has brought up another good thing to think about with that candidate, but the electablitity is what struck me. If you want to see Mike’s other thought, check it out here.

My concern with this is that people will edit their votes and never vote for the people they think would be best for the job. I don’t know what God will do in the elections. For all I know, the person least likely to be voted in could be chosen by God to be in that position.

What do you think?

Who Are You Going to Vote For and Why?

Posted by: Michael Feather   in Discerning Truth

I know, I may have just opened up a big discussion, but I really want to know. This seems to be heating up a bit and we need to be thinking about the process. If you are like me, I would rather bury my head until it is all over, but can we do that as Christians?
Do you have a favorite right now? Who is it and why? I would love to hear from you.
